NHS Trust fined after leaking the personal details of HIV patients via group email

An NHS Trust has been fined following a “serious breach” of data privacy after a group email was sent disclosing the names and email addresses to all recipients.

In what turned out to be a hugely costly administration error, The 56 Dean Clinic who specialise in sexual health matters, inadvertently leaked patient details by revealing their name and email data to a large recipient list. Up to 800 patients were included on the circular and given that the clinic served a very tight knit local community, the scale of the embarassment caused was extreme. A number of the patients affected were HIV sufferers and had attended teh clinic for treatment.

The Trust apologised for the error and admitted they had “screwed up”. The Information Commissioner issued a fine of £180,000 on the Trust citing a serious breach of the law.
