Investigation launched into death at oil refinery

Health and Safety Executive launch an investigation after a man died in an explosion at an oil refinery - 2nd July 2010

The police and the Health and Safety Executive have launched an investigation into an explosion and fire at an oil refinery in North Lincolnshire which left one man dead.

Over 50 firefighters were called to the Lindsey Oil Refinery in North Killingholme near Grimsby when black smoke was seen coming from the plant.

The man who died in the workplace accident, was aged 24, and is thought to be from Grimsby. He had been working close to a crude oil distillation unit which caught fire before exploding.

Contractors working at the neighbouring ConocoPhillips Humber Refinery later staged a one-day walkout over safety concerns as they believed that plant was left vulnerable when its firefighting team joined those putting out the blaze at the Lindsey refinery.
