TUC worried H&S review will affect worker protection

The TUC has expressed concern over news that the new coalition government is to conduct a review into current health and safety legislation.

The government announced yesterday that former Conservative minister Lord Young is to undertake the review which will look into the application and perception of health and safety laws along with the rise of the ‘compensation culture’.

However TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber argued whether a ‘compensation culture’ actually existed, saying that compensation claims had actually fallen over the past 10 years.

He added: “This will not be an open and frank review aimed at better regulation. Instead it is an attempt to undermine the already limited protection that workers have by focusing on the needs of business.”

Some people frown upon companies offering no win no fee compensation claim services, but if workers do suffer injury from an accident at work that is down to their employers health and safety failings, then the least they deserve is to be compensated.
