Supermarket fined for having dangerous floors

Morrisons supermarket in Rothwell Leeds were fined for having unsafe floors - 1st June 2010

Morrisons supermarkets has been fined £12,000 because of an unsafe floor at its store in Rothwell, Leeds.

The supermarket chain was handed the fine after admitting health and safety breaches at Leeds Magistrates Court.

The court heard that the firm had been warned before the store was built that it should not use terrazzo tiles in food preparation areas as they were dangerous if food or drink was spilt onto them as they would become slippy putting people at risk of slipping and falling in the supermarket.

Leeds City Council brought the prosecution after taking the view that the supermarket had failed to ensure that its surfaces were appropriate.

James Monaghan, head of health and safety at the council said: “We hope this sends out the message that safety of employees is of vital importance and that employers must take their responsibilities seriously.”
