They have identified 6 key elements involved in effective management of the situation:

• Recording sickness absence

• Keeping in close contact with the absentee

• planning and undertaking work adjustments to minimise injury or illness

• Using professional advisors and helping the absentee to recover with treatment

• Agreeing a return to work plan

• Co-ordinating the return to work process.

One good example of a preventative measure quoted was the cost of flu vaccines which can be as little as £8.75 per person yet the cost of flu related absence can run into many thousands for even small to medium firms.
