They have identified 6 key elements involved in effective management of the situation:

	Recording sickness absence
	Keeping in close contact with the absentee
	planning and undertaking work adjustments to minimise injury or illness
	Using professional advisors and helping the absentee to recover with treatment
	Agreeing a return to work plan
	Co-ordinating the return to work process.

One good example of a preventative measure quoted was the cost of flu vaccines which can be as little as £8.75 per person yet the cost of flu related absence can run into many thousands for even small to medium firms.
