Absenteeism  at a record low but the public sector still outdoes the private sector

New research has shown that British workers took the lowest number of days off sick on record last year.

The CBI survey shows that public sector absenteeism had improved slightly although it was still significantly higher than the private sector rate. The report showed that 180 million days were lost through sickness last year, an average of 6.4 days each, down from 6.7 days in 2007.

Despite the small improvement the CBI warned of the effects that sickness leave had on the economy with it costing an estimated £16.8bn last year plus indirect costs such as reductions in customer service and delays to teamwork.

Katja Hall, the CBI’s director of employment policy said: “The rate of employee absence has come down, but it still costs the economy billions of pounds a year. If absence levels across the board could be reduced by 10%, the economy would see annual savings of just under £1.7bn.”
