Latest road casualty statistics for 2006

Department for Transport release the latest road accident statistics for 2006

30 May 2007

The Dft have just released their latest round up of road casualty statistics for the year 2005-2006.

There has been some modest improvement in the number of road accident casualties on 2004/05 with road deaths reduced by more than 50 and many other elements showing a marked improvement. There is of course a need for the government to continue in their efforts to reduce road casualties and the charity Brake has one again made a valid contribution to this issue making the following comments.

Road deaths have barely fallen over the past decade. The Government’s road safety strategy aims for a 40% reduction in road deaths and serious injuries by 2010 (compared to a 1994-8 baseline). Although on track to reach this target (deaths and serious injuries have so far fallen by 34% since the baseline), the number of people killed on our roads has fallen by a pitiful 12% since the baseline. Brake is urging the Government to set a separate target for reducing fatal crashes, where reductions are still shockingly small.
