Speed limits to reduce to 20mph in built up areas

NEWS - New government proposals to tackle speeding in urban areas

23.04.09

In what could be a wide ranging and quite radical reform process, the government today announced plans to reduce speed limits in certain high risk areas on Britain's roads.

In a move which has been widely welcomed by road safety campaigners across the UK, the Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick said that the changes would affect a number of key areas such as speed limits and rules surrounding learner drivers. Reductions from 30mph to 20mph in urban locations and 60mph to 50mph in the countryside are being considered in order to reduce road accident injuries.

Here are some of the proposals put forward

 - 20mph zones around schools Review speed limits in accident black spots

 - New expert panel to investigate road safety

 - Plans to cut road deaths by a third by 2020

- New vocational qualification for van drivers

- Providing learners with more information to help them to choose an instructor

Places such as Newcastle, Portsmouth, Oxford and Leicester already use 20mph speed limits in residential areas, and other local councils will be given new guidance to cut speed limits in residential areas and outside schools.
