12.06.08 The Home Office have recently released
statistics revealing that West Yorkshire police vehicles
were involved in collisions that led to 52 injuries
during 2006/2007 up from 24 the year before. This was
the highest total of injuries for 5 years. The road
injuries were caused during emergency calls or high
speed pursuits. Oddly these statistics were on the back
of a reduction in the actual number of collisions. There
were 1054 collisions during the year in total. Further
information suggested that West Yorkshire Police paid
out more than £253,000 in road
injury compensation awards to claimants in one year.
Many of the
injuries were whiplash related and few were at the
serious end of the scale. However there were calls for
retraining of key traffic police officers to increase
awareness of the issues. MORE NEWS
