Modern safety rules which lead to newer models of
cars being broader are being blamed for an increase in
minor
car accidents.
Experts say that the size of modern cars, which have
been designed to include extra safety features and
enhanced comfort, is leading to more scrapes on minor
roads and on urban streets where roads are lined with
parked vehicles.
Accident Exchange, an accident management firm has
said that drivers are nowadays finding it more difficult
to judge the width of their cars.
The Volkswagen Golf is 110mm broader than it was in
1992 and the new Vauxhall Astra is 77mm wider than
earlier models. Claims settlement director Lee Woodley
said: “The ever increasing waistline of the modern car
is a major contributory factor in
crashes on Britain’s roads.”
