Drivers using mobiles face stiffer penalties

Drivers who are caught using mobile phones whilst driving could face tougher penalties - 19th January 2010

New proposals are being considered for drivers caught using their mobile phones at the wheel.

The current penalties, introduced in 2007, are a £60 fine and three points on the licence but the Department of Transport is now considering whether to increase the punishment.

Current research shows that people who use a mobile while driving are four times more likely to have a road accident and that their reaction times are 30 percent worse than for those driving whilst under the influence of alcohol.

There has already been a 35 percent fall in the number of people using a phone when driving since the existing penalties were introduced but the DfT may go further if proposed new research recommends it.

Existing measures see new drivers faced with having their licence revoked and having to re-sit their test if they get six points on their licence within two years of passing their test.

If caught, uninsured drivers face possible penalties of six to eight penalty points and a fine of up to £5,000.
