Teenage drivers are the most dangerous

A new survey shows teenage drivers are twice as likely to be involved in a road accident - 19th February 2010

Teenage drivers are twice as likely to have a road accident as other driver according to a new survey.

The poll, from Admiral Insurance, has said that drivers aged 17 and 18 are six times more likely to have an road accident than those aged over 50.

Other findings from the survey were that approximately 10% of drivers aged 17 and 18 have been involved in a road accident compared with 4.5% of drivers in their 40s. Also, younger drivers were twice as likely to have a road accident as those in their 30s and three times more likely than those in their 40s.

The cost of accidents involving teenage drivers was statistically twice as much as those involving other drivers. Admiral says this is because collisions caused by younger drivers tend to be at higher speed and often involve accident injuries being caused.

Admiral Insurance Managing Director Sue Longthorn said: “From our point of view, driving experience makes a huge difference and is the main reason older motorists have lower premiums.” She added that it was not until drivers reached the age of 25 that their accident statistics significantly improve.
