A new scheme in South Devon has seen
the police train members of the public in using speed
guns.
The local force hopes that the
scheme, which involves eight people patrolling 14
specially selected roads, will deter drivers from going
too fast in the region and hopefully reduce the number
of
road accidents.
All the members of the public taking
part have been trained to use the speed detection
equipment although drivers caught speeding by the
volunteers will be sent a warning letter rather than
face prosecution.
The scheme is in addition to
monitoring by other traffic units and camera vans. It
has been named Speedwatch and is seen as an extension of
Neighbourhood Watch with members of a local community
wanting to make their streets safer. The police will
consider extending the scheme to other areas if it
proves successful.
