A review is to be carried out into possible changes
to the motorcycle testing and training regime with a
view to reducing
motorcycle accidents by better preparing riders.
The Road Safety Minister Mike Penning announced the
review following concerns voiced by motorcycle groups
about the current test which was introduced last year to
meet the requirements of the EU directive on driving
licences, but has not helped with road safety in
reducing
motorbike accidents.
The review will look into the manoeuvres carried out
in the off-road test and whether they can be conducted
in the on-road part instead. It will also consider what
aspects of the current test should be looked at
including how and where the tests can be better carried
out.
Mike Penning said: “Road safety is a top priority and
the testing and training on offer is vital in our work
to cut the disproportionately high number of
motorcyclists killed and injured on our roads each
year.”
