Drivers hate being tailgated

Motorists detest being tailgated most when driving - 22nd February 2010

A new survey has revealed that tailgating is the thing that motorists hate about their fellow drivers.

Tailgating is a dangerous way to drive, massively increasing the chances of a road accident if the vehicle in front needs to stop suddenly. Those in the lead vehicle are also put at greater risk of suffering whiplash accident injury if they are involved in a rear end collision.

The survey, from Kwik Fit looked into what irritated drivers about others on the road and found that tailgating was top of the list closely followed by jumping traffic lights, hogging a lane and hesitant driving.

The survey showed that women hated tailgating more than men but they were more tolerant about some other aspects of driving such as dangerous overtaking or lane hogging.

David White, customer services director at Kwik Fit said: “It’s clear that the root of this frustration is the danger that these habits pose. Although driving too close to another vehicle isn't a specific offence, it's one of the most common causes of car accidents. But many accidents are caused by aggressive driving - whether it's people driving too close to the car in front, dangerous overtaking, or jumping traffic lights.”
