Drink driving down in West Yorkshire

Though positive breath tests were down through December there are still too many say Police - 2nd February 2010

New figures released show that drink-driving was down in West Yorkshire over the Christmas period.

A total of 734 breath tests were conducted by the West Yorkshire Police after road accidents and 6.6% of them were positive, down from 8.5% last year.

Figures were also down where breath tests were conducted but no collision had occurred.

There were 989 road accident collisions in total on the region’s roads throughout December, 11 fewer than last year.

Nationally, more than 223,000 breath tests took place with 7,638 being positive or refused or failed the tests.

Inspector Russell Clarke, of Roads Policing in West Yorkshire, said: “While it is pleasing to see the number of people caught driving over the limit has gone down, one positive breath test is one too many. We will continue to take action against drink drivers throughout the year. The public can play a key role by reporting people they suspect to be regular drink drivers.”
