Drink drive limit lowering being considered

The government is looking at lowering the drink drive limit - 8th June 2010

The new coalition government could follow the old government’s plans in lowering the drink drive limit.

Sir Peter North has produced a report for the government which includes a recommendation that the drink drive limit is lowered by almost half, from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml to 50mg. That equates to less than a glass of wine or a pint of strong beer.

Their are still too many road accidents where drink is a factor, so anything that helps reduce road accident casualties should be applauded.

There are suggestions that Sir Peter also recommended random breath testing, an even lower limit for new drivers and a new offence for driving with an illegal substance in the bloodstream at levels deemed impairing.

A spokeswoman at the Department for Transport said: “We need to tackle drink driving in the most effective way possible to protect law-abiding motorists. We are considering Sir Peter’s report carefully and will respond in due course.”
