Average speed cameras for the UK

The A13 in London is to have average speed cameras introduced in a bid to reduce road accidents - 20th January 2010

Average speed cameras are to be introduced for the first time in the UK.

A total of 84 cameras are to be installed on a stretch of the A13 in London by next summer in the hope that it will drastically reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured in road accidents on that stretch of road.

Almost 500 collisions occurred on the A13 between Canning Town and Goresbrook in east London, between 2006 and 2008 with three of those road accidents resulting in fatalities and 34 others where people were left with serious injuries.

Its collision rate is almost a fifth higher than other major roads in the London area and speeding is thought to have contributed to many of these road accidents.

RAC Foundation director Professor Stephen Glaister said: “This is exactly the right way to target road safety: take specific action to target a specific problem. Average speed cameras are already a familiar feature in roadworks and they have the advantage of smoothing traffic flow rather than creating the stop/start sort of driving often associated with fixed cameras.”
