Bosch has released a new night vision system which
has the ability to identify pedestrians and alert the
driver to their presence.
The new system is an enhanced version of one which
first appeared in the new Mercedes E-class and would
help to cut the number of
pedestrian accidents.
The system, which is known by Bosch as ‘Night Vision
Plus’ provides a high-contrast image of the area just
ahead of the vehicle.
Pedestrians can be identified and highlighted on the
screen meaning that a driver has more time to take
action than if they were just relying on the beams of
headlamps thus reducing the risk of
road accidents.
‘Night Vision Plus’ works through infra-red
headlights, invisible to the human eye illuminating the
road.
At the same time this is recorded by a camera
installed behind the windscreen. Images are then
processed by a control unit and shown on a
high-resolution display in the car. The system’s
software allows it to distinguish between stationary and
moving objects.
The need for greater help for drivers at night is
illustrated by
Department for Transport figures which
show that deaths as a result of
car accidents
in 2008 stood at 8,000 during daylight and 11,500 at
night.
