Banks and lenders usually have up to eight weeks to resolve any complaint made against them.  However, since the collapse of the banks’ judicial review action in April 2011 , there has been a huge backlog of complaints relating to mis-sold PPI.

In August 2010, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) published a handbook, identifying common mis-selling practices in the PPI market and addressing how customers who were mis-sold PPI should be compensated. http://www.fsa.gov.uk/pages/Library/Communication/PR/2010/132.shtml

We have recently experienced reluctance on the part of some firms to correspond with us, preferring to cut out the intermediary altogether and correspond directly with the customer.

For instance, in a recent case, Barclays responded to our detailed Letter of Complaint by simply copying us in on a letter to the customer, which enclosed a copy of the standard Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) questionnaire for him to complete - http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/publications/technical_notes/ppi/guide-to-PPI-forms.html. This was not withstanding the fact that Barclays had been served with a copy of our client’s Form of Authority, in which he expressly requested that Barclays liaise directly with us and release all information to us.

Welcome to the Claims Connection blog on PPI claims.

Over the forthcoming months, I'll be discussing the day-to-day trials and tribulations in the life of a PPI claims handler.

The blog may be of interest to solicitors or claims handlers dealing with PPI claims, or to individuals considering making a complaint about the sale of PPI through an intermediary.

I'll be discussing the technical issues and points of interest regarding the PPI mis-selling scandal, as well the new issues arising as banks and lenders struggle to cope with the flood of complaints.

Watch this space.
