Widow considers action against local NHS trust
A woman is deciding whether to take legal action against her local NHS trust after alleging that her husband died following a number of failings by the hospital he was a patient in.
Neville Bairstow, who died of liver cancer in July, aged 66, was a patient in the Gledhow Wing at St James's Hospital in Leeds, but did not get seen by a doctor until three days after he was admitted and his widow insists that a doctor who did treat her husband was neglectful in his care. She says that the doctor, who she has yet to identify, sent her husband away for a scan despite already knowing what was wrong with him and when he was too ill to move.
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has already admitted "sub-standard" care in relation to Mr Bairstow and has said that it has changed its admissions policy on Ward 9 of Gledhow Wing as a result of the failings. Mrs Bairstow says that she wants the doctor identified and is considering taking legal action against Gledhow Wing.
