Pneumonia victim left in cold hospital corridor for 25 hours
An 84-year-old woman, suffering from pneumonia, was left in a hospital corridor for 25 hours on one of the coldest nights of the year.
With temperatures dropping to -10 outside, Mary Bowers was left in the corridor from 5pm on Monday to 6.30pm on Tuesday last week. The incident occurred at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, which has issued a full apology to Mrs Bowers, blaming increased admissions, staff sickness and the Norovirus bug which led to some wards shutting down.
Mrs Bowers daughter, Joyce Woolley said that her mother was wearing just a nightie and had a thin blanket covering her, although staff gave out extra blankets in the night because of the cold weather.
Mark Mould, chief operating officer at the hospital, said that he had offered sincere apologies for the length of time Mrs Bowers had spent on the corridor. He added: "The department has been very busy. The situation was difficult because a bigger proportion of patients than normal required admission. This was coupled with staff sickness in the department and Norovirus, which had closed four wards."
