No kerbs could make for safer driving
New research by a team from Newcastle University has suggested that removing kerbs could lead to safer driving.
The team questioned over 1,500 drivers on their motoring style and personality and found that a third were easily bored and could find risks through speeding or overtaking. With drivers relaxing and at risk of losing concentration on the roads, researchers believe that measures such as taking away the kerbs, so that pedestrians become closer into view, may force drivers to focus more on the road ahead and not be so easily distracted.
A total of 31%, which included women and younger drivers, said that they became easily bored while driving, though a slightly higher figure, 35% described themselves as "enthusiastic" drivers and said they found it a challenge and were therefore less likely to cause accidents.
AA President Edmund King said he was not surprised that more people found driving a bore as cars as now overloaded with gadgets to ease driving and many distractions have already been removed by planners.
