Mineworker killed in museum accident
An investigation is underway by West Yorkshire Police, along with the Health and Safety Executive's Mines Inspectorate, following an accident at the National Coal Mining Museum in Wakefield in which a man died.
The 58-year-old mineworker, who has not been identified, was part of a team of contractors working on extending an underground roadway when it is believed he became trapped by machinery. The museum says that the accident occurred when the museum was closed to the public and therefore there was no danger to visitors. In the meantime underground tours at the museum have been suspended.
In a statement the museum said: "Although no longer a working coal mine, the museum still operates under the stringent regulations of Mines and Quarries Health and Safety legislation, regulated by HM Inspectorate of Mining".
