Doctor free to carry on working despite misconduct charge
A doctor has been told he is able to continue practicing, despite being found guilty of misconduct following a girl's death from pneumonia.
The girl, known only as Hannah, was taken by her parents to see Dr Shoab Ibrahim at a medical centre in Wickford, Essex, after she had been vomiting and had a high temperature. The doctor said that she was suffering from a chest infection and advised her parents to give their daughter Calpol syrup. The girl continued to deteriorate and was taken back to the doctor five days later where he again told her parents to keep giving her Capol. Just hours later the girl was rushed to hospital and died there of pneumonia.
A subsequent hearing at the General Medical Council found Dr Ibrahim guilty of misconduct but ruled that it was "highly unlikely" that he would ever make the same mistake again. The panel chairman said that he had shown insight into his misconduct and had remedied his deficiencies.
Hannah's parents claimed that the GP had only taken moments to examine their daughter and had his back half turned away from them during the consultation. Dr Ibrahim denied that he had failed to listen to her parent's concerns but admitted that he had not kept an adequate record of the consultation.
