Dental regulator steps in following teeth whitening complaints
The General Dental Council wants to limit the number of unlicensed teeth whiteners following complaints about patients being left with damaged teeth.
The regulator says it is speaking out due to the number of complaints it has received about procedures in unlicensed spas and high street salons which have seen people left with burns and gum damage. Many thousands receive the treatment in Britain every year but while dentists charge about £500, it can be done far cheaper by other, unlicensed operators.
Untrained operators are able to carry out the procedure because the current regulations were drawn up 27 years ago when teeth whitening was very rare and the GDC says it is concerned that a growing number of salons, clinics and shopping centres are offering the treatment to be carried out by unregistered individuals.
The GDC is supported in its campaign by the British Dental association, whose spokesman, Stuart Johnston, said: "We're concerned that some non-dental professionals carry out treatments using inappropriate and potentially dangerous chemicals".
