Critics slam NHS call centre proposal
NHS plans to move much of its administration work to India as part of an efficiency drive have been heavily criticised.
A study by NHS Shared Business Services has found numerous examples of waste within the health service and has said that the NHS could save hundreds of millions through efficiency savings. It says that a start could be made by outsourcing administration to India.
However the idea has been slammed by the Big Opt Out, which encourages people to opt out of a national NHS database, while pressure group Health Emergency, has described it as a "cheapskate option". Critics say that the proposals could lead to patient confidential records being put in danger while there could also be a rise in the number of misdiagnoses as call centre staff in India are unlikely to know how the NHS works.
NHS Shared Business Services, which aims to improve efficiency throughout the health service, says that it has found many examples of waste during its research, including eight NHS trusts wasting £750 a time by paying different prices for the same pacemaker.
