Yorkshire lags behind in ambulance response times

Yorkshire ambulance service response times are improving but there is still work to do - 25th June 2010

New figures suggest that the Yorkshire Ambulance service is at the bottom of a national table for response times and the Care Quality Commission, a government health watchdog has ordered an improvement.

Slow response times need addressing because the longer it takes the greater the risk to patient safety and there will be an increase in NHS Trust complaints.

The figures show that emergency vehicles reached 70.8% of their destinations within eight minutes, when the acceptable figure was 75%.

There was a change to government targets in 2008 in which the time frame began when the call was connected to the ambulance control room as opposed to the previous situation when it began after the caller had given their details over the phone.

The service now aims to have a plan in place by October to respond quicker and says a review is underway on how to cope with the increased demand.

Simon Worthington, acting chief executive of the Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust said: “The report shows that improvements in performance have been made and year on year we are reaching patients more quickly than before. We remain committed to making further improvements.”
