A 10-year-old girl who died after a throat tumour was
mistaken for asthma has had a narrative verdict recorded
by the Coventry coroner.
The girl died on 16th November 2008 whilst being
taken from the
Coventry University Hospital to a
specialist unit in Leicester the coroner Sean McGovern
heard.
Prior to her death she had been taken to the hospital
on five occasions in the proceeding fortnight, and had
also had four consultations about shortness of breath
with her GP's surgery.
Along with a diagnosis of asthma, the girl had also
been told she was suffering from a post-viral wheeze.
The diagnosis made could be understood considering
the symptoms shown, with
medical negligence not thought
to be the cause of incorrect diagnosis.
The coroner recording his verdict offered his
sympathies to the girl's family and described the tumour
as a "vanishingly rare" condition, saying "Although
there were indications that Bethany Flowers' symptoms
were not entirely consistent with asthma, such a
diagnosis is understandable, although it transpired to
be inaccurate.
"Although potentially treatable, it is not possible
to say whether an earlier diagnosis would have
materially affected the outcome."
