New approach to bowel surgery

Yorkshire hospital one of 14 to join the Enhanced Recovery Partnership programme - 12th January 2010

The Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust is to become part of a new approach to bowel surgery.

The trust is one of 14 sites to take part in a new Enhanced Recovery Partnership Programme which aims to help patients recover and return home quicker than before. It hopes to combine best practice in the organisation of patient care and clinical management.

If the new approach is successful it will see less physical stress on the patients as there will be less pre-operative preparation; new surgical techniques and pain control will be better managed.

Dr Julio Nunez, the clinical lead for the programme said: “Enhanced recovery is an exciting new concept, which uses a structured whole team approach to provide the best care available for patients. Patients are allowed to eat, drink and get on their feet a lot sooner.”
