Checks on hospital prescriptions issued across
England have found that almost one in ten contained
mistakes.
Only very few errors would have caused serious harm
despite this
medical negligence claims the
General
Medical Council (GMC) who commissioned the study.
The research team inspected 124,260 prescriptions
from 19 hospitals and found that just short of 9%
contained mistakes, but dispelled the myth that
inexperienced doctors were responsible for the majority
of errors.
Of the 11,077 errors found, around 2% contained
mistakes that could have caused serious harm to the
patient, but it was found that most mistakes are
discovered and corrected before the prescription reaches
the patient by senior doctors, nurses and in particular
pharmacists.
The study raised concerns that there is too much
reliance on mistakes being spotted where doctors have
shown
medical negligence in writing incorrect
prescriptions.
Many in the medical profession believe that different
processes for prescribing prescriptions across
hospitals, varying from hand written forms to electronic
forms can cause confusion, with calls for a standard
form across all hospitals being made so medical staff
are all familiar with the same standard form.
