CQC may use new powers to close failing NHS Trusts

One in eight NHS Trusts have been warned to improve or face the consequences come April 2010

Regulators have published ratings on England's 392 NHS Trusts, with an eighth being told they must improve.

The regulators, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) will from April 2010 have greater powers ranging from closing underachieving trusts and possible prosecutions where there is seen to be medical negligence, to offering advice on improving performance in trusts.

Whilst the CQC's assessments showed a fall in hospitals meeting basic requirements in things like hygiene and safety, it did find that the report showed the highest number of services recording ratings of good or excellent to date.

The report is seen as the NHS's most rigorous assessment ever by the government, with plenty of positives, notably that the majority of patients across England received hospital treatment where needed within 18 weeks.

However for the second year running the number of operations cancelled at the last minute due to non-clinical reasons rose to 63,000, although more procedures are being re-arranged within 28 days of the original date, and the increase may in part be attributed to the increased number of people receiving treatment.

Though there are still many NHS complaints made, on the positive side many patients reported that they were able to book appointments within 2 two days.

There are however regional differences with the NHS appointment booking times, with trusts in London performing badly for patient satisfaction for booking appointments and opening hours.

NHS complaints can sometimes be misleading, so if you want to know how your local trusts are performing visit the 2009 ratings for health care services overall performance, and enter your postcode.
