Drink driving laws to be toughened in the UK

One pint may be enough to send you over the limit? 28th February 2007

The Governments ongoing review of road safety in the UK may involve making changes to the drink drive laws.

They are considering reducing the alcohol level of 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood down to 50mg which would place the UK on a par with many European countries. The plans may also involve on the spot roadside breath tests - similar to those conducted during the Christmas period but scheduled all year round.

Drink drive deaths are at their highest since 1992 despite a raft of new measures, publicity and extra policing to counter the problem The families of accident victims would welcome changes of this kind.

There has been a rise in car accident claims arising from alcohol related incidents during the last few years. There is a recent statistic showing that when breath tests increase, drink driving levels fall. Manpower and resources allowing - this has to be seriously considered in the future.

Update

The government are considering lowering the drink drive limit - June 2010
