What is Whiplash?

Whiplash injuries usually result from rapid acceleration or deceleration movements following accidents or involuntary movement. The symptoms can be severe and medical advice should always be sought.

These injuries usually affect the neck (cervical) or mid back (thoracic) areas of the spine. Car accidents are the main cause of such injuries but in truth they can happen in many different circumstances Most people experience neck pain either immediately after an event or several days later.

Delayed symptoms are not unusual when dealing with these injuries. How do you treat the condition? People often ask should they seek medical attention when suffering from these injuries - the answer is that you most definitely should. The best place to seek advice would be the local hospital where various tests can be carried out (if necessary) but GP's are also well equipped to handle these injuries.

Symptoms may include the following:

Neck stiffness, injuries to the muscles and ligaments, headache and dizziness, abnormal sensations such as burning or prickling, shoulder pain etc.

Whiplash injuries can also cause back pain.   If you have suffered from whiplash then we can help you claim compensation and at the same time explore what treatment options may be available to you.

Your treatment is important because left unattended, whiplash injuries can become chronic and the symptoms possibly permanent.   Many insurers will now pay for treatment (physiotherapy etc) to help your recover - assuming that you were not to blame for the accident that caused the injury.

The insurer may have their own nationwide treatment teams which will allow you to receive free therapy rather than paying out of your own pocket.

Contact us today to start your claim. Our whiplash claim solicitors have many years experience of dealing with these injuries and we can assure you that you will be in very safe hands.   Visit Northern Ireland injury claims for cases arising out of the province.

Additional information about the spine

The spine is divided up into 5 distinct categories.

These are known as the Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar, Sacral and Coccygeal areas of the spine.

Any area of this spine may be affected by a whiplash injury. Such an injury is usually characterized by symptoms that occur following sudden extension and flexion.

It is not the case that the neck and only the neck has a vulnerability to this kind of problem. It is more common to sustain injury in the upper neck (cervical region) or the mid back (thoracic region). However the whole spine can be affected by the wrenching or straining that is associated with an accident related injury.
