Injuries caused by sunbeds and tanning treatment

Lots of people like to have a tan to give them a healthy glow. Whether this is achieved through sunbed treatments or applying false tan.

However, as in anything there are hidden risks in exposing yourself to such treatments. For instance the application of spray tan without an appropriate patch test can cause an allergic reaction. Whilst the sunbed equipment itself can malfunction or be ill maintained, or if the light tubes have recently been changed a person could burn a lot quicker than would be expected. Other considerations to take into account are eye problems and the development of cataracts from not wearing appropriate goggles and even the risk of skin cancer.

Something else to take into consideration is sanitation. If the equipment is not properly sanitised between uses then it is easier to contract skin conditions or suffer from skin irritation.

The use of sunbeds anyway is regulated by the Sunbed Regulations Act 2010. This came into force on the 8th April 2011 and prevents the use of sunbeds on commercial business premises by those under the age of 18. These Regulations also make provision for the owner of the business providing the use of the sunbeds to provide health information to its users and provide mandatory eye protection to its users.
