Supermarket concerns over customers slipping

A supermarket, part of a nationwide chain, recently identified health and safety concerns within the store and found that customers' slipping is one of the most significant issues, whilst slips and trips are the most common feature of accidents at work generally, with a large proportion of these involving broken bones of some sort.

Slips and trips account for around one in three non-fatal major injuries and for over one in five three-day injuries in workplace areas throughout Great Britain. HSE statistics show that most of these injuries are slips which occur when floors are contaminated, from water, grease or some other substance.

The dangers in supermarkets are quite easy to identify as the possibility of slips and trips is magnified by the number of items on the shelves which could fall and result in a spillage of some food or liquid. So in supermarkets, as in other areas of work, effective planning is essential and certain steps should be undertaken to ensure that the risks associated with slips and trips are minimised.

The stakes are high however as customers slipping in supermarkets are a significant health and safety issue and, as we shall see, claims of this sort have led to high figures being paid out in compensation to those injured as a result. So there is understandable pressure on the stores to take all action necessary to reduce the risk of such accidents occurring.
