Slips and falls in supermarkets case studies

An old case saw an 89-year-old Scottish woman receive an estimated £5,000 after she slipped and fell on washing up liquid which has been left on the floor of her local Safeway supermarket in Perth.

Annie Curran broke her arm in the fall and the case hit the headlines after it emerged that she was left on the floor for several minutes without receiving attention because paramedics waited for the liquid to be cleaned up as they were also afraid of slipping.

In another case, a 62-year-old man received £10,500 in compensation after falling outside a Tesco store in 2009. The man slipped on the pavement outside the store which had been coated in slime because a nearby sewer had overflowed. The man suffered hip and spine injuries and tore a cartilage in his knee.

It emerged that Tesco had been aware of the danger and that the company had not erected signs warning customers and contractors of the dangers of slipping. Tesco admitted liability and settled out of court.

A case earlier this year saw Thomas Wardle receive £10,500 after slipping on a grape at an Asda store in Peterborough. Mr Wardle fell to the ground, badly injuring himself in the fall which occurred in January 2008. He took legal action for the pain and suffering that was caused and it emerged in court that action was due to be taken against the store for two similar accidents which took place around the same time.

An interesting case was that of Cornelius Buckleigh who faked a slip in a supermarket to try and gain a compensation payout. The man deliberately emptied a bottle of shampoo on the floor and then pretended to slip on it and fall heavily at a Tesco store in Yeovil. A court heard how Mr Buckleigh also showed three teeth to staff which he claimed had been knocked out in the accident but it emerged later that a dentist had extracted them from his mouth earlier that day and he had taken them with him to the store in a bloodstained tissue.

A security camera had caught the incident on film and Mr Buckleigh admitted attempting to gain money by deception.
