Leeds Hospitals
NHS Trust is being sued by a patient
who lost a leg through complications following routine
surgery.
Simon Aitcheson from Bradford was born with spinal
problems which led to changes which left his left foot
deformed.
He then had two operations to reshape it and was to
undergo a routine third operation to lengthen the leg
and straighten it.
After this final operation Mr Aitcheson noticed a
black patch of bruising which later developed into an
open wound which became infected.
Other specialists were called and it was revealed
that Simon had a joint dislocation in his foot with
other abnormalities meaning that the leg had to be
amputated leading to him suing for
medical negligence.
The case has led to the Trust asking
the Royal
College of Surgeons to look into a ‘small number of
cases’ involving Toby Branfoot, the surgeon who carried
out the third operation.
Mr Aitcheson was fitted with a prosthetic leg a year
ago but he has difficulties walking and it is feared
that this will worsen in future years.
He said that, although he had been told about
possible complications, he would not have gone ahead
with the third operation if he had known that there was
a possibility of him losing his leg.
