1000 Superbug victims a week according to the Health
Protection Agency.
In the last 12
months there have been up to 56,000 reported cases of the Clostridium
Difficile (known as CDiff) superbug in Britains hospitals. This is the
strain of virus that many believe can be eradicated by a more effective,
basic level of hygiene. The figures were released in a report by the
Health Protection Agency.
The true scale
of the problem suggests that the numbers could run into hundreds of
thousands of related bug infections because the recently release statistics
only cover the over 65 age groups.
The cause of the
infection very often is thought to come from unclean bedding or unwashed
hands which spread the virus. The bug is now thought to be a bigger killer
than the MRSA bug that for years has been the most commonly encountered
infection in the health system. The Health Commission recently issued a
report that blamed unreasonable targets and low budgets for the spread of
hospital infections. The bed occupancy rates and quick turnaround of
patients is resulting in staff not having sufficient time to prepare for the
next patient. The situation, according to
Patient Concern
is getting out of control.
